360 life cycle

The only justification I can see behind people's belief the 360 will have a short life cycle in that the Xbox had one. One console isn't really a pattern now is it.The Original Xbox's life was cut short due to Microsoft's design decision to include a Hdd with every system. This prevented microsoft from ever selling the console at a profit.Peter Moore:''Not having a hard drive in every Xbox 360 was a hard decision, but we wanted to get price under control. The hard drive in every Xbox killed us; we we're still selling it at $199 and the hard drive was like $70. That's why we prematurely left the original Xbox, because the more we were selling %26ndash; there was still great demand %26ndash; it was killing us, and there was no way to bring the price down.

''So in the end we determined at around the 25 million unit mark that we just needed to slow this thing down and just not sell any more, and move to the 360 as quickly as we possibly could. And to this day people still believe we left the Xbox too early but it was purely for financial purposes.''
If microsoft continue to make a profit on the 360 what reason would they have to bring out a new system early? It just doesn't make snese. 360 life cycle
A new Xbox won't be released until 2011... mark my words.360 life cycle
well, consider the source (SW posters). i agree with BioshockOwnz. 2010-2012.
720 will be released november 2010, I bet everything I own on that prediction. As for 360, MS said it will have a 7 year cycle. But hey, if it sells after 7 years, MS could keep it around even longer.
A new Xbox won't be released until 2011... mark my words.
I would agree, probably around 2011 or 2012, and the PS4 around that same time. Any earlier than that just seems ridiculous and harsh to their fanbase.
There won;t be a new console from either MS or Sony. What you will see for a while is different variations of them. Ex) PS3 160 gig, 360 60 gig and so forth. This gen is gonna last a ''while'' I don't even think there will be a new console till 2013 to say IMO.
What are peoples reasoning behind these ''bets''. Explain your logic.
And there's one thing people don't seem to remember. the first Xbox, in its whole 4 years life, was not profitable. The 360 became profitable 2.5 years after its release.Another point, it still sells well.Third party devs are getting more and more on it.Also, that having a somewhat inferior hardware (that in compensation is more dev-friendly) has never mean a short life cycle. The PS2 survived longer than the Cube and the Box, and it was not exactly the most powerful console. The 360 is in a FAR more solid position than the Xbox at this time.
And there's one thing people don't seem to remember.....
Yeah, I mean you managed to forget it between reading my post and writing yours :P
Until the recent price drops X360 had declining sales. X360 has sold less worldwide for 2008 than it did in 2007, MS is trying to build momentum coming into the holiday season but overall this has been a bad year for MS. I think that is what has been fueling the short life cycle belief. Also it's how MS works, they never have long product cycles on anything they make.
What are peoples reasoning behind these ''bets''. Explain your logic.
If I had to guess, I'd say it had something to do with the Wii HD version slated for 2011. Just a guess, but it uses logic ;)I can't speak for everyone though lol
I think they'll want to keep it alive as long as it's healthy and profitable. Sony on the other hand is in the same position the Xbox was in last gen, and will likely try to kill it off as soon as possible so they can stop hemorrhaging money.
With the way the systems are going you cant be very smart just blurting out, 2010-2011 as a prediction. With the internet and firmware updates with the systems they can keep adding new features. The 360 is getting a new dashboard close to 2009, they are putting to much money in right now to just say ''Hey new 360 out next year''. There is too much potential with the systems to just give up and make new ones.

Did something change?

Agreed and I'm thinking 2012 for a new MS console. The library and XBL has just really shined this gen. and the 2012 guess stems from what I believe was the original plan to launch 2010/2011 but MS I think has been pleasantly surprised at how well the 360 has done when compared to the PS3, Wii is a I dunno what to say there and MS seems content to take the fight to Sony anyway. My worry about the 360 and MS is that even in 2012; the 360 will probably be around the 79.99 to 99.99 and MS may just find themselves in the same quandary as Sony this gen - How do I get the gamers to stop buying 360 and start buying the new console. Though knowing MS, they have a plan to deal with that - maybe. ;)
Here is what I found from last quarters financials:''Sony's game unit displayed the most momentum within the company, tallying 5.4 billion yen ($51 million) in positive operating income. That is a huge improvement over the 29.2 billion yen in red ink it incurred last year. Divisional sales climbed 16.8% to 229.6 billion yen ($2.2 billion). Sony credits PS3 hardware cost reductions and rising PS3 software sales with powering the games division. In the quarter, 1.56 million units of PS3s were sold worldwide, an increase of 860,000 units over the amount sold during the prior year's comparable frame.''It's hard to say since everything is lumped into their games division, but they are obviously not in the same situation they were in a year or two ago with PS3.

Look at the history. Sony seems to release a new console approximately every 6 years, while keeping the old console alive at the same time. If this is true, I would expect MS to release the next Xbox at the same time as PS4 at the very latest.PS - 1994, PS2 - 2000, PS3 - 2006...pattern says..maybe PS4 - 2012.For the next Xbox it would be appropriate at the 2011 mark at the earliest in my opinion. Unlike MS's previous strategy (however 1 console does not indicate a pattern), Sony continues the old product for some time after the new product already released. Therefore, not being a slap in the face. All I'm saying is, if MS were to release Xbox 1080 720 34023945 whatever you want to call it in 2010 and then just stop the 360 (like they did last gen), that is a slap in the face. I would assume that this time around they wouldn't just drop support after seeing how well the PS2 stayed alive after the PS3 released, so I doubt it's an issue.IMO that makes sense, but I don't see why some people think that in 2010 or less we will see the next Xbox.
