That may be true, but the PS1 slaughtered it in terms of sales and Nintendo lost their position at the top of the gaming world.

If you don't know the N64 lacked lots of great 3rd party support because of its choice and limitations of its choice format. Final Fantasy left Nintendo and joined the Sony camp as well as many other games that helped keep Sony king of console with a bigger lead then ever before for 2 generations.
I liked N64 games better than PS1 games. Then again I was a kid when it came out.
The key difference here being that CDs were used to quite an extent and that they were cheaper to produce than cartridges.
CD was a major improvement because it was easier to produce games for it then for cartridges. The same can't be said about DVD vs. HD-DVD/Blu-Ray.
N64 didn't need CDs, but it would've helped. We would've seen FF7 and MGS on N64.
what are you talking about about? thats one of the reason n64 lost out to ps1, n64s games cost more to make, cost more to buy, had horrible sound quality, and anything pre-rendered look horrible, I mean I loved my n64 but that was a big error on nintendos part and they paid for it.
Laserdisc was a bigger improvement, but wasnt really used in consoles. I do see the leap from carts to cds bigger then any other format jump aftewards. At the end of the day dvd, hdvds and blu-rays are just larger discs. Cd isnt a large cart.
the n64 lost.
